Sketch an ordinary day
Write down five regular journeys: work, school, shopping, a walk and meeting friends. Decide which you want to do on foot and which can involve transport. This becomes your personal framework for searching.
Visit at different times
Morning calm can become a busy evening street. Notice lighting, traffic, sounds and how comfortable you feel. Do not judge an entire area by one street: explore several blocks.
Separate the area from the home
Liking an area does not make every home in it suitable. Light, lift access, condition and layout need checking at every address. Keep two lists: requirements for the area and for the home.
